PRocess: Originally, it was a goal of mine to create some sort of piece of clothing but I realized that in order for me to have done that, I should've better prepared myself. Afterall, I'm not proficient at sewing with a machine, so that would've been a skill that I needed to master.
I still wanted to do a studio that incorporated some sort of clothing item and that's when I thought of fashion sketches. When going through pinterest, it is incredibly easy to bump into the infamous watercolor sketches that are so aesthetically pleasing. I automatically knew that I wanted to implement some sort of culture into my sketches, and asian culture as a whole had crossed my mind. However, for the sake of accuracy, I focused on three specific countries. I sketched, as much as I could until I acheived what I had planned on doing in the first place. MY SKETCHES: Once I achieved the final sketches that I wanted to pursue, I drew out what i wanted to achieve with pen on a sheet of watercolor paper. As soon as all the sketches were drawn into the watercolor paper, I immediately started to paint.
EXPERIMENTATION: For a couple of my self portraits for this summer project, I used watercolor so I felt pretty proficient on it. There are obviously some more skill and technique that come along with it but overall I felt good using it. I was also successful at creating the ombre effect which I wanted. Reflection: Ever since I was really young, I've had aspirations of becoming a fashion designer but ever since then I was also very realistic. I shut down all of my possible dreams to become one, but through this studio I was able to relive those dreams. Overall, I do believe this piece could've gone a lot better. Originally, I was going to make these into drypoints and then use watercolor on top, but due to some technical difficulties with the drypoint machine, I couldn't do it. That is how I ended up using pen instead. As I added on the watercolor, sometimes the pen would smudge and make the color a lot darker or muddy, which I found really annoying.

artistic & cultural inspiration
Meaning: I tried to incorporate as much of the colors that would normally be see through those garments, but I also decided to use my own so I could give my own representation of the work. For the first piece which is the Chinese red dress, I used red due to its classic feel. In China, the color red is used as a symbol for luck and therefore it is used on clothing for several important events like holidays or weddings. It is also a very bold color, which makes the sketch seem a lot more impactful than the other two. For the Japanese piece, I wanted to incorporate the blue colors because aside from providing a contrast between my work, I also wanted to incorporate some mysteriousness. The color blue can either be known for its dark like mood or for its bubbly mood. The lighter the color, the happier. The piece that I created compared to the picture of reference shows that specific contrast. Lastly, I wanted to incorporate the color yellow. When I looked at the Korean garments, they reminded me of little doll dresses and overall I tried to symbolize childhood through this sketch. The use of yellow is a refreshing feeling which also makes my viewer feel happy when looking at my work. Throughout this studio, I incorporated as many feelings and colors as possible to further represent a culture.

Act Questions
1. It is clear how I implemented each of the traditional garments for the three countries into my three sketches. I wanted to develop my own intake of them yet still demonstrate the meaning and symbolism which they behold.
2. The sources that I looked into described each of these countries to have very specific meanings for all the aspects of their clothing. It described them all as conservative yet very embellished.
3. It's come to my attention how a lot of cultures that have been present and active for years have created so much symbolism for their people. There are so many objects and colors that one can overlook but another can glorify.
4. The central theme of this studio is the constant idea that "pretty" art can also be meaningful. There are far too many symbolism within the cultures I used for inspiration that I should incorporate.
5. I've come to the conclusion that there's no way clothing could be made without the inspiration of a certain culture. Therefore, the use of these three specific culutres only futher demonstrates how one could possibly incorporate them into their own pieces.
